What kind of Yoga is this?
The yoga taught at the studio is called the Monnier Method. Our yoga classes are based on a series of asanas commonly know as the 84 Classic Asanas. The closest style of yoga to our classes are those from the Bishnu Ghosh lineage. The closest style would be Tony Sanchez’s yoga systems.
Where does this Yoga stem from?
The approach we use at the studio is from a Ghosh lineage. The Director Brian Monnier was a direct student of Tony Sanchez. During his time with Mr. Sanchez he was learned the series by practicing it with Mr. Sanchez for period of about 4 years. Mr. Sanchez was a protege of Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury during the late 70′s-early 80′s. Mr. Choudhury was one of the star students of Byamacharya Bishnu Charan Ghosh. Whose school in Calcutta, India is still open today.
Is this Bikram Yoga?
No. While our system has many of the same poses, our classes are NOT Bikram yoga. Though the roots of the class comes from the same source, the sequence and methodology are very different. Our classes are not based on his system and come from older system as taught by Bikram’s teacher, Bishhu Ghosh. We have no affiliation in anyway with Bikram or the Yoga College of India. We do not offer Bikram Yoga.
Is this yoga safe to do while pregnant?
Yes, our classes can be modified for those blessed with pregnancy. However, we highly recommend that you have an established Hot Yoga practice before joining our classes. Starting our classes without Hot Yoga experience is not recommended.
Why the heat?
The heated room helps warm the muscles and prevents injuries when stretching. It also helps the body detox by making you sweat profusely. The heat also allows you to get into deep restrictions safely, it loosens everything up. You will see deep lastly change after some prolonged focused effort.
Why the carpet?
Mainly it is a personal preference of the Director. It is gentle on the joints and allows you not to have to use a Yoga mat for standing poses.
I have never done yoga before, can I do this class?
Absolutely! Our classes are designed for beginners! They are physically challenging but can be done anyone. All postures can be modified to accommodate physical limitations such as injury or pregnancy.
